#87 Catching 101
First Comic Previous Comic Next Comic Today's Comic
Looking Back:
In the Pokémon games, once you've got your pokédex and pokéballs the first thing you'll do is typically go catch some wild pokémon both to get some data in your pokédex and expand your team since one pokémon probably won't get you very far. This comic also serves as a very brief intro to pokémon catching for people who aren't too familiar with the games. Basically, the weaker a pokémon is (as in, the more you reduce it's health), the more likely it is to be caught in your pokéball instead of breaking free. Makes sense. However, it seems that if a weak pokémon is easier to catch, an unconscious pokémon should be ideal, right? Logically, yes. But, from a gameplay perspective, it's a heck of a lot more challenging to reduce a pokémon's HP to a very low level and keep it there while trying for the capture than it is to just knock the thing out. Because of this, weak pokémon disappear immediately after being KO'd so you never get the chance to throw a pokéball at them. So the whole point is really to keep the game challenging.
Back to the strip, Brendan does what he usually does (and continues to do) and asks the logical and rational question. Unable to think of a good answer, May snaps at him, ending that line of discussion rather than admit that she doesn't know and it doesn't make any sense. Interesting thing is, she does answer this question later in the comic. Chances are, she was annoyed at not being able to answer this time so she did some research on the subject for a future conversation.
