| Looking Back: This strip shows up a bit more of Xain's personality. Not only is he incredibly vain, he also loves insulting anyone that isn't up to his standards. I remember that I really wanted Brendan and May's new rivals to be annoying. I didn't want people to hate them but I didn't necessarily want people to like them either (like seeing them screw up perhaps). Which was a bit of a Pokémon Red/Blue approach. In Gold/Silver your rival was an arrogant thief and in Ruby/Sapphire your rival is a helpful friend but Gary back in Red/Blue was just plain annoying. Over time I suppose they've ended up a bit more likable than I originally planned, just because of how funny they are, not really because of any redeeming personal qualities they have. In addition to the angry eyes, I tried to show even more anger by doing the little forehead vein on May in panels 3 and 4. If you're an anime or manga fan, you'll probably recognize it, if you not you most likely will have no clue that it's supposed to show anger. Although it actually didn't look that bad, I didn't use it too long. The eyes just seemed like enough by themselves. |
