Looking Back:
And Xain makes his first appearance. About a week before this strip, I started working on sprite sheets for Xain and Cali. It took quite a lot of time since I basically made Xain and Cali sprites to match every Brendan and May sprite I had at the time (which wasn't a full set but was still pretty large). Just in case anyone out there hasn't noticed, Xain uses an edited and recolored Brendan sprite. Recoloring is actually pretty easy once you know how to do it. Assuming that you want to take one color and replace it in every single spot with a different color, it's a pretty quick and easy process even when you're recoloring an entire sprite sheet. Editing, on the other hand, takes time. You have to go in there and manually change everything you want changed in every sprite and make sure it's consistent. Xain was a fairly simple edit, the only changes being the pattern on his headband and his hair style (a smoother version of Brendan's).
As far as the dialogue goes, I have to admit that I got some inspiration from the 'Lord of the Flame' bit in the movie Ice Age. I think it did a good job of showing off Xain's personality, and why May tried so hard to avoid him.
