Looking Back:
You know, there's not really any reason for May to think that Xain is the one ringing the doorbell but, with that kind of timing, who else could it be? I can't remember if, back when I made this strip, I had already decided that Xain would have a lousy sense of direction. That decision might have come a bit later on, after he walked into the closet. Now that I think about it, this was probably just a one shot joke but, as I further developed Xain's character, it helped lead to the decision to give him such a horrendous sense of direction. Moving on to a different part of this strip, May's actions remind me a bit of a fake service announcement they used to play on Nick-At-Night (back in the early days of Nick-At-Night they had several fake 50's style public service announcements they would play during commercial breaks). It was about how to avoid a visit by unwanted relatives. Tips included setting up an early warning alarm, locking the doors and windows, and hiding in a shelter, which is a bit more extreme than May's solution. Although, if she had a shelter to hide in she probably would have gone there.
