Looking Back:
This strip is pushing up against the 4th wall a bit. So why is the store sold out of pokéballs? Well, when you first reach the Pokémart in Ruby/Sapphire, or most of the Pokémon games for that matter, your character doesn't have the pokédex yet. And without the pokédex you can't record data on captured pokémon or anything like that. Plus, no one has taught you how to catch pokémon yet. So the stores are conveniently out of pokéballs when you first reach them and then magically get in a shipment right after the professor gives you a pokédex. Not very logical but it works. Still, it's kinda like the hardware store running out of hammers or something like that.
