Looking Back:
In the games, you always start battles with whatever pokémon is in the first position in your party menu, whether it's a good fit for the current battle or not. And since pokémon gain XP as long as they're in a battle even for half a round, it's common practice to put a weak pokémon you're leveling up in the first slot and then immediately switch to something better. In real life though, there'd be no reason to always open with the same pokémon and quick swapping like this would probably tend to annoy your opponent. Since, if you're confident enough to give them a free attack just so you can level one of your pokémon up a bit quicker, you clearly don't consider them to be much of a threat.
