#108 It!!!

Looking Back:
This strip was mostly a copy and paste job from the last one. A bit lazy perhaps, but at least we get to see the real "it" this time around. For the handful of you that don't know, mewtwo is a legendary pokémon and one of the most powerful ones in the games. To give a quick recap of the plot behind it, mewtwo is an extremely powerful psychic pokémon.  In the anime and manga mewtwo was created by Team Rocket (the Pokémon series's original evil team). Based on mew's cells, it was further enhanced in an effort to make it the world's strongest pokémon. The origin varies slightly in the games, where mewtwo is actually the child of mew which was then genetically altered by Team Rocket. Unfortunately for Team Rocket, it ended up being a bit too powerful and eventually escaped and took up residence is in a large cave, which could be reached after defeating the Elite 4 in the original Pokémon Red/Blue and the GBA remakes Pokémon FireRed/LeafGreen. Getting through that cave and capturing mewtwo was the final challenge in those games and could make for quite an epic battle...unless you just used the master ball right at the start for an instant capture. Speaking of pokéballs, in this strip the Black Suit Guys have mewtwo in an ordinary pokéball, which seems pretty odd if you think about it (heck, it's hard enough to catch with an ultra ball) but I didn't really think about that at the time and, even if I had, I didn't have any other balls sprites yet.
Anyway, this whole thing raises some plot questions. For example, where did Team Rocket get mew's cells to begin with? That one depends on your source material. In the games and anime it's hinted that Team Rocket discovered some sort of ancient relic or fossil containing mew cells, while in the Pokémon Adventures manga they actually managed to capture mew for a short time and got the cells before it escaped. Though it probably won't come up, Pebble Version goes with the ancient fossil explanation. The other big question is how the heck did the Black Suite guys get mewtwo? Did Ash never catch it after becoming league champion back in the day or did something else happen later? That answer will be revealed in time but for now you'll just have to guess.
