Looking Back:
Although I wasn't consciously thinking of the "rule of three" (that a joke can typically be done about three times in a row before the audience gets tired of it) when I made this strip, that's more or less what I was doing. I figured I could drag out the joke for one more strip before moving on to something different. When deciding whether or not to repeat a joke, and how many times to do so, I've never actually relied on any rules but just gone by my feelings at the time. Naturally, I don't repeat too many jokes multiple times in a row but it does happen occasionally, usually for one of two reasons (either I think repeating it would be funny or I'm currently very busy with real life stuff so I do it to save time). Now that I think about it, it would be kind of interesting to go back through the archives and do a count to see if I usually ended up following the rule of three or not.
By the way, this happens in the game too. Sometimes, it really looks like you caught the wild pokémon and you're just about to celebrate...and then it breaks free again.
