10,072 says that another power of 10 has been added, that's why. You can get by without using commas for the thousands place, but once you're beyond that, you should have a comma.

10,073 almost never uses commas when writing out equations in science or math classes. Takes too much time. 10,073 will start using commas here though, but mainly for aesthetic purposes.
