Does that Gary sprite from Strip #200 have or will have any significance later in the story? Or is he just having a random cameo?

It's a random cameo of a PV reader combined with an attempt to make a city look a little more like a city by having random passersby (something the Pokémon games finally started doing in B/W). If you look at the related Blooper Reel comic, it mentions that it's a cameo.

In making webcomics, how important is it to stay on canon?

[Josiah]

"You mean like, not do a lot of random side strips that don't fit anywhere in the overall story? Well, that really depends on the type of comic you're making. Non-canon stuff can be fun and/or interesting and in a random humor comic most people probably won't care how much you do so long as it's funny. In a story based comic (humerous or not), you need to make it clear that non-canon stuff is non-canon and it should never become your primary focus."
