Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
Hi! It took all day but I think I'm finally done with reviews on my book proposal. The majority of the rest were very positive, except for one where the guy seemed to think that Mafia Wars and Microsoft's Project Natal are the be-all end-all of game storytelling and I should devote a significant portion of the book to them. Not sure what the heck he was thinking seeing as Natal is a camera and Mafia Wars doesn't have much of a story, but whatever... On the up side, the acquisitions lady seems pretty positive that she can get my proposal through...on the down side she thinks I need a second "more experienced" author in order to do so. Gotta say, I'm really tired of having people tell me I can't do this or that because I lack industry experience. Fortunately, according to her I'd still be in charge of the main book and the secondary author's job would just be to write some side bars and provide some script samples, "war stories", and the like, which really isn't too bad of a deal (though they would get a cut out of my comission). She has some ideas in mind for the second author, though I was able to make some suggestions of my own so I'm hoping to get one of my professor friends from my college (since I know them, like them, and worked with them on my thesis, on which the book would be loosely based). She gets the final call though, so we'll see what happens.
Anyway, really long somewhat frustrating day and I'm glad that it's finally over.

Hey Josiah, I have a question for you. Well, more like two. Have you ever wanted to be a professor for gaming instead of a designer? And how tough is it to get into graduate school and stay in there?

Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
Hi!
Yeah, I've thought about becoming a game professor and there's a chance that I will if an opportunity comes along. While I'd much rather be a game designer, as a professor I'd still sorta be in the game industry and I could use students to work on my own game projects which would hopefully do well and give me the oppertunity to become a full time game designer. Though just being a professor wouldn't be bad, at least at some schools.
How hard it is to get into graduate school entirely depends on the school. I had absolutely no problem doing so, but I had gotten my Bachelor's degree (Summa Cum Laude) at the same school. Different schools have different admission requirements so I really can't comment. As for staying in, that's pretty easy. As long as you don't start flunking everything or refuse to pay tuition it's not like they're going to kick you out. In graduate school there's a lot more homework though, and requirements for paper writing and research are much more strict.
In forum news, I'll update PP tomorrow and try to do a big ROM post as well. If I somehow forget, remind me and I'll be sure to get to it Sunday.

Did you mean Gar?Siranae wrote:Hey Poik! Long time no see! Er, long time no post? Maybe? Ah, whatever.
Yeah, it depends on the graduate school, and level. Some have a five years masters plan, and they lay out exactly the requirements you need to meet it. But I've seen those in the engineering and business fields mostly, I don't know about any others. Sorry.
Wow, Summa Cum Laude. Okay, I'll admit it, I'm jealous.

Wait, why am I asking you? You're smarter than me if you can achieve that. Or more dedicated. Same difference.
But yeah, since I want to become a doctor(a pediatric oncologist at St. Jude no less), I imagine that getting into and staying in graduate school is going to take some hard work and deep pockets, as well as some reputation if I want to get into the better schools. Good thing I'm going to Rhodes College. My uncle has some connections to Harvard, so the difficulty of getting in should be a fraction easier.
Are my goals just a tad steep?

Hi! Actually, from what I've seen, graduate programs often have lower tuition than master's programs and at some universities grad students can actually got a lot of their tuition waived by working as TAs for undergrad classes. If you want to be a doctor though, I don't think you actually have to go through a normal Master's program (the normal length for which is two years, I believe). You go to medical school instead, which is a bit different and quite a lot longer.

er...yeah, that's what I ment! Totally! Ok, yeah, I knew what it was, I just got a little mixed up. My first choice for med school would be UT Medical in Memphis, which is just right around the corner from Rhodes. But I still have to pass the MCAT, which is very hard and very expensive. Wish me preemptive luck guys!

Oops. Yeah, I meant Gar. Sorry about that.

Re: Return of the Revenge of the Son of Saying Hi to Josiah!
Hi! Good luck, Gar! My brother is actually studying for the MCAT right now, though he hasn't decided yet if he wants to go to medical school or chiropractic school once he gets his bachelors.

Hyvää päivää.
Wow, lotsa talk about jobs and colleges. Some topics I know nothing about. well....almost nothing. It's still a bit early to be talking about that stuff, but I have an idea about what I want to do out of school.

Hi! I finally got my copy of Mario Galaxy 2! Only had time to get the first four stars so far, but it's looking like a lot of fun. Other than that, the Junior College Baseball World Series (not so much world, since it's just US, but whatever) is in town this week (it's always held hear this time of year). I don't care about it too much but I'll be going for a while tomorrow to help my dad get some guy's autograph and to hang out with a friend I haven't seen in a long time.

'Lo y'allz. I've been getting into cooking as something to do between hospital visits, so may someone please unlock the cooking thread so that I may post an amazing chocolate icing recipe?
