Games I've Played Recently
Re: Games I've Played Recently
Bayonetta. It's hyper violent (there's lots of blood, dismembered bodies, torture attacks, etc), hyper sexual (pole dancing with a spear, the "bondage" torture attacl, etc), and quite possibly sacriligious (fighting (evil?) angels), but ridiculously fun. I mean, my current weapon collection includes killer ice skates. What's not to like? With the possible exception of Viewtiful Joe (which was made by the same guy), it's the best action game I've played.
And no, I totally didn't post this in the wrong thread the other day, delete that post, and repost it here...
Planning to finish Bowser's Inside Story and Higurashi soon, it's just a matter of getting more free time and pulling myself away from Bayonetta during said free time. Actually, the the case Bower's Inside Story, it's also getting my DS fixed. It keeps randomly shutting off when I play. I need to call Nintendo about that...

Really getting up there in Dissidia, almost every character's up to 100 now. Oh, and I got my first 20 on Guild Wars the other day.

Rania - Female; Type: Water, Grass; Abilities: Torrent, Overgrow; Attacks: Tackle, Curse, Razor Leaf, Bubble W/L = 5/0
Karst - Male; Type: Normal; Abilities: Keen Eye, Guts; Attacks: Tail Whip, Scratch, Defense Curl W/L = 2/0Re: Games I've Played Recently
What a coincidence, my copy of Umineko just arrived yesterday.Josiah wrote:Planning to finish Bowser's Inside Story and Higurashi soon
I was thinking of purchasing Higurashi, but I didn't like MG's changes (even though it could be patched) and the lack of a physical disc.
Re: Games I've Played Recently
I do wish Manga Gamer sold disc based copies instead of doing download only, but you can always burn the files to a disc and make your own (in my case, I just told my online backup program to back up the game folder). And you can always redownload, so long as MG doesn't go out of business anyway. As for the changes, all the did was replace a couple pieces of music due to copyrights (and none of the replaced pieces were all that important to the overall score) and remove one rather unimportant extra (also because of copyright). Not really a big deal.
If you want to complain about their release, it's better to mention something else, like their copy protection program. Though you only have to enter a code while online once and then it's good forever (doesn't need to check in with their sever or anything), for some reason it runs some little program every time you launch the game to make sure you entered the code that first time (seems unneccessary since it doesn't check the internet, just something on your computer). That wouldn't be a problem except that said little checker program runs in a really weird way, which has a tendency to set off virus scanners and cause them to block it. So I have to disable part of my virus scanner for the thirty seconds it takes me to launch the game, after which I can turn it back on. Minor annoyance, but still... The biggest problem with their release though, is that it's in serious need of editing. For the most part, it's a great translation but I rarely even see fan translation projects with so many typos. Actually, it bugged me enough that I'm going to e-mail them soon and suggest they hire a dedicated editor (like me, for instance, since I am looking for a job and all). Overall though, it's still a good "game" (quotes because there's no gameplay what so ever, so it's more of a book with music and pictures) and it's the only way to get the original game in English (there's only one fan project, as far as I know, and they only finished the first scenario).

Re: Games I've Played Recently
Luckily, the people over at /jp/ are working hard at editing the whole script, fixing both typos and translation errors.
I think their patch is either out now (incomplete) or coming out soon.

Re: Games I've Played Recently
/jp/? Who are they? Anyway, Manga Gamer may have some faults with their current release process, but I can't complain too much since I'm pretty happy to see a company releasing officially liscensed copies of visual novels in English. Now if they'd just focus more on the visual novels and less on the hentai games...
On the subject of visual novels, I very highly recommend Fate/Stay Night. Mirror moon did an excellent fan translation patch for it a while back and the story is absolutely amazing. The patch is for the "adult" version though (the all ages version was only released on the PS2, making it a lot harder to patch) so there's a few fairly graphic sex scenes in there. Fortunately, they're very rare (about six or seven in a game that takes around 60-70 hours to fully complete) and have little real importance to the story so you can easily speed through them without missing much of anything.

/jp/ is a board from 4ch that is full of people who talk only about Touhou, VNs, and Japanese birds cooking spaghetti. Most of the fan translation teams these days organize there at first.
I've read through Tsukihime before, so I planned to read through FSN one day, once I could get myself a copy.
Another VN I purchased before was Yume Miru Kusuri. While, yes, an adult game, it's plot is still rather good. A high school story focusing on the major problems of high school life (bullying, interpersonal relationships, and drugs).
Other recommendations are the usual Narcissu and Planetarian.

Re: Games I've Played Recently
Type Moon is awesome, so I definately plan to get Tuskihime eventually (probably after I finish Higurashi and Kannon). Thing is, when it comes down to it, most visual novels are adult games. Some the "adult content" is the primary focus (like most of Manga Gamer's currently catalogue, unfortunately), but in many they're just there because it's expected that there will be adult scenes in visual novels, like the token sex scenes in many Hollywood movies.
As for Fate, importer sights charge a fortune for it, so I ended up torrenting the disc images. I will however, track down and buy a real copy next time I go to Japan.

Ah Kanon, I installed it once and even voice patched it, but never got to touching it only because I hated the pacing in it.
As for H-scenes, yeah, almost never important (only VN it was important with so far that I've played was Yume Miru Kusuri). Luckily, the CTRL button exists.

Re: Games I've Played Recently
I have Yume Miru Kusuri installed on my computer (don't tell my mom) thanks to Colly, though admittedly I've barely touched it yet. I'm mostly just here to make a statement. And that statement is... my girlfriend gave me porn. I never really thought about that before, but... I'm not sure if I should rate that as incredibly awkward or incredibly epic.
A-anyway, discussing VNs... I don't mind the ones that make the adult content the main focus. Mostly because then I know I can avoid them completely and really not miss out on anything. Chances are they don't have much of a story, just some pretty pictures and some that... aren't so pretty. It's stuff like Kanon and Air that annoy me... throwing in H-scenes when they're totally unnecessary, inappropriately timed, and have absolutely nothing to do with the story. I want to support Key and play through the original work, but... I think I'll stick with my all-ages anime that actually makes sense, thank you.
Ok, so maybe the story still didn't make that much sense ("I'm the real Makoto! not the fox, this is a total coincidence!"), but still.
I don't know what to do with YMK... because according to Colly, it really isn't about the sexy stuff, but it's still important. The story focuses on the relationship between the main guy and one of the three girls, and, well, that would obviously have an impact on said relationship. I give the author props for handling it well, not just arbitrarily adding it as a selling point. It just makes me hesitate to actually read it, because I'd have to... pay attention. Which is a little awkward.
Point is. The world needs more Planetarian.

"Irregardless" and "Over exaggerated" are NEVER CORRECT EVER because they are redundant
Regardless means "without regard", and adding "ir" on the front actually makes it a double negative; exaggerate means "to overstate" so you're literally saying "over overstate."
Example: I can not exaggerate the importance of this fact enough, regardless of how often people ignore it.

Re: Games I've Played Recently
True, the stuff were the H scenes are the main focus usually doesn't look like it has much of a plot. Fate's the only H game I've played (well, Kanon too, but I've barely started it so I won't comment yet) and, while I'll admit that you can get a slightly better feel for the girls' personalities if you read those scenes, you're really not missing anything important and in two of the three main story paths, they really feel like they were just tossed in there because players expected the game to have H scenes. I mean, I was about 12 hours into fate before hitting the first H scene, which came out of nowhere. Up until that point, I'd pretty much forgotten I was playing an "adult" game.
The nice thing is that most of the good visual novels where the H scenes aren't important like Fate and all the Key games (Kanon, Air, etc) tend to get rerelased in an all ages version later on. Some of them actually work with the English patches (like Kanon), others don't (like Fate). But they do exist. And, of course, even in the unedited releases, said H scenes tend to be pretty easy to skip through. And besides, you can very easily (on purpose or by accident) find far worse stuff online anyway... If something has a good enough story (like Fate), I'm willing to put up with a few H scenes. I mean, it's not like I need to pay attention to them.

Just got Lego Rock Band. Me and Tango were rockin' out to that. Also got Phantasy Star 0, which I've yet to start. Need to play LoZ: Spirit Tracks, too...
May the Triforce be with you.

Finally got around to playing Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and it rocks many faces as well as beating the ass out of the first game.
