I'm not sure if this is the way everyone else does it, but I put the picture on photobucket, use the [img] thing in the post and put the direct link from the pic into the brackets.

Yeah, you've got to get the picture online. I have my own website and everything so I use that but most people use either photobucket or image shack. Then you just put in the direct link using the Img button.
