Looking Back:
Like I said in the commentary for the last strip, it's easy to get used to something failing, in which case you'll often be quite surprised when it doesn't. Seeing as May has mostly just seen Brendan horribly screw up his various pokéball throwing attempts, she wasn't expecting him to get it right this time. Although you have to wonder how he screwed up so badly in the past. How hard can it be to throw something at the ground in front of your feet? It'd seem like that would be the one place you'd never miss.
If you're paying close attention, you might have also noticed that things like the flying pokéball, torchic's coming out of the ball effect, and the little text for what the pokémon are saying, have improved considerably since the really early strips, although they're still far from perfect. I may have been improving fairly quickly at the time but there was still only so much I could do in MS Paint.
