Sluggy Freelance

Post by Siranae »

You’ve probably heard me mention this comic once or twice. It’s called Sluggy Freelance. It’s been one of my favorites for a while now. The earlier comics are somewhat poorly drawn, but they get noticably better.

I think this comic is T-rated, so bear that in mind.

The comic centers around several friends:

Torg, freelance web designer, possibly the main character.
Riff, Torg’s best friend, loves to build weapons and blow things up.
Zoe, works at a radio station, and turns into a camel if someone says “Shoopid”
Gwynn, dabbles in black magic, works at a zombie themed restaurant
Bun-Bun, Torg’s evil bunny, carries a switchblade and loves Baywatch. (My first Avatar here)
Kiki, hyperactive ferret
Aylee, an ever-changing alien, Torg’s secretary, loves to eat potatoes.

There have been too many story archs to count. They range from parodies, comedies, to even serious plots. I think Doodleshark may enjoy the Years of Yarncraft arc.The most recent one, however, is based on many others. I wouldn’t recommend it to a first time reader.

And if anyone likes Harry Potter, there's several parodies. Harry Potter and the Giblets with Fiber was my favorite.

Some of the arcs don’t require full knowledge of the cast. Usually you can pick a link from the drop down menu and begin reading. Some of the more recent chapters act this way. There are story lines, however, you may have to read through the comic to comprehend.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT try to read the whole comic, unless you can handle massive archive binge. This comic has been updating almost daily for ten years. You can do the math.

Here’s some links to some highlights.
Bun-Bun’s first fight with Santa
Zoe as a Camel
This arc is a parody of some anime shows, mainly Voltron
A funny random Dr. Who filler
This Plot I've always found funny

A long comic needs a long list of links

Hope you like it!

I love this comic! so far this and This

The art is good but the storylines are hilarious!

That, and I like PETA Reps getting hurt. I'll cap their asses if they take my dogs away.
This is my RP Forum, Tales of Symphonia Adventures, or ToSA for short. Please take a look?

I would totally say that SF is nothing more than a bunch of web comic cliches, the niave nice guy, the best friend who's a crazy inventor, the evil cute thing, the girl who gets dragged into it, etc...except that it's been around so long that it probably started all those cliches in the first place, which kinda makes it ok. I'm nearly to the end of May 1999 so far and, while I'm not enamored with it, it's been mildly entertaining. And there's been a few strips that have been really funny. For example, I learned not to make evil proclamations in the middle of the road, and that you need to be careful when hiring sound effects guys, to be careful when making up names, and that deadly traps are sometimes edible.

I agree with you, Josiah. There are loads of cliche's in this comic, many they right out just blatantly state, like Bunbun. The first years are okay, quality and storyline wise. The more modern comics are a little more entertaining. But yeah, there are still a lot of generic qualities to it.

Ah, whoops. Meant to reply a bit ago.

The art, at least at the part I'm at, is nothing special, but it's not terrible. It's fine by my standards, though the text can sometimes be a bit difficult to read.
It is certainly cliched, but again I'm fine with that. There have been arcs that I've really thought were funny, and other times where I was just going "where'd the funny go?". I think I'll keep reading though, we'll see how far I get. Still need to finish the Ozy and Millie archive...

And as for comics that I liked, this, this, this and this are some of my favorites.
May the Triforce be with you.

And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid." ~ William Ernest Henley

Right. I enjoyed what I've read. It was a little cliche, and a little odd, but it was funny here and there. Well, I didn't keep tally on favs.
