ROM 4: New Horizons

Neo was enjoying the time on the ship alone. He just couldn't shake off the uneasy feeling he was having. Then he felt something. He quicky rushed over to the other side of the boat. Something came over the hill on the other side of the river. Then it came into full view. It was a Veterna. A creature rummered to live in the forest near his home. Though never seen he had fought it's 3rd level form several times. He never imagined seeing it's 4th stage. And here of all places. How it got here he couldnt' figure out. But for now, it was hear and that was not good.

"Josiah gather everyone!" Just as Neo said this a shadow ball struck the side of the ship, rocking it. That attack hit near where Neo was standing, almost as if it was aiming at him.

Shauni and Opal had no idea what was going on back at the boat.

Shauni had lead Opal to the shrine in which Midori Fidori lived.
"This is the shrine. We must pray to the goddess of wisdom before we may enter"

Shauni got down and began to pray
"Your praying to a fake god in a video game Shauni..."
Shauni sighed "I know, but it is a custom we must respect or Midori will turn us away..."
She ranked Opal to the ground "Just pray"

"Alright..." Opal sighed and begain praying. Weird thing though is that she really wasn't the religious type so never really knew how to pray. Even when that priest came to her dads house and they said grace at supper. She just sorta sat there, not praying.
What am I suppose to say? Um...dear goddess of wisdome....amen.
Is all Opal could think of to think.

*As it turned out, there was no need to gather the others. The sudden turblance was all the alert they needed.*

"An attack, already?!?" *David scrambled up from below deck.* "How did they know we were here?"

"Fudge crackers! Couldn't they at least wait until we were on land to attack?"

"Where's Josiah?"

*Meanwhile, Josiah and Midnight Wing were already speeding towards the giant monster with Virgo flying nearby.*

"It looks like a dark type!" *Virgo called as they drew closer.*

"Right." *Josiah nodded.* "Let's hit it hard and fast. We have to keep it from doing any more damage to the boat!" *He rose and jumped off of Midnight Wing while returning it to its card.* "Rayzion, merge with me and form...Perfect Light!"

Neo quickly summoned Queen Ice Bird and picked up Tsuekasa and both headed over to the monster.

"I thought that things was only a myth and how did it even get here from the forest?"

"I don't know but we got to stop it. It just had to be resistant to most of my monsters didnt it."

Neo quickly summoned Fenix and Tsuekasa summoned Mystical Shining Ball.

"Nice day for battle hey Josiah."

Neo still couldn't beleave the size of the thing. It was about 30 or so feet tall. It's 3rd form was only about 6ft.

"Dark Purge now!" Mystical Shining Ball launched a beam of energy that struck Veterna head on. The attack did damage but the monster seemed not too fazed by the attack.

"Fenix, use Fire Blast!" Fenix covered it's body in fire and launched the shape at Veterna. But to his supprise, it dodged out of the way and countered with Darkness Wave that struck both Neo's and Tsuekasa's monsters.

Then it tossed a Shadow Ball at Perfect Light. Josiah dodged it but instead of going into the air and disapating, it arched and headed over to the boat, stricking another part of it doing some damage. Then Veterna begain to glow and dark energy seemed to flow into it. "Great, it's using Oversoul."

Before the large black and white monster could finish its attack, a wild river emerged from the ocean all around them and knocked it backwards. Sure, it didn't do any damage, but it prevented the attack's completion and directed Veterna's attention to the only present monster that could rival it in size - Nessie. "Good work, Nessie! Now get out of there! None of you attacks will do any good!" called Silver from the back of Arco Iris. Bringing Tashi or Manja out on the ocean would be suicide, so Arco Iris and Reckeleck were the only ones in the air, although a still mostly bald Kojie was ready on the deck of the ship. "Kojie, Sun Shine! Reckeleck, Supreme Zap! And Arco, use Broken Light!" Silver commanded. Since their giant foe clearly wasn't very fast, the attacks of both Wind Monsters struck. Kojie's Sun Shine was more to boost the power of its weakness; now one of Josiah and Rayzion as Perfect Light's super-effective attacks would do even more damage than it normally would.

Opal seemed a little stunned as the doors opened, but quickly shook it off.
"Er yes, we shall." She gave a weak smiled as she followed Shauni into the temple.

He awoke to the stench of smoke and burning flesh all around him. The cries of the dying were fading... His body ached and his head was throbbing as he gathered what had just happened.

Dizzy and disoriented, the man stood and leaned on a scorched tree. As he came to his senses, his eyes wided at the destruction around him:

Buildings burning or burned down; mutilated bodies strewn like unstrung beads on the dirty, cobblestone road; the night sky had been replaced with blood red on black clouds of choking smoke as the fires roared all the hotter, the insatiable appetites of the flames getting greedier as each hut and shack was being consumed to ashes.

Desperately he looked around, calling out for anyone who was still alive. He was only answered with the crackling of hungry flames and the moans of those who had decided to die. It wasn't long until he found the charred remains of his wife and infant son in the dying flames that had consumed his home. More people he recognized.... many of whom were his family...

Moen had been very thorough in wiping the last village of his tribe off the map forever.

Then he heard a cry in the midst of the roaring flames, the smoke, the ash, and the embers. This wasn't the cry of a dying mortal, but the cry of one who's life had just begun.

The man found the infant clutched in his mother's arms. She had shielded her baby from an arrow and died instantly. The way she fell had hidden the child well from the soldiers of Moen and most of the child's cries were drowned in the chaos of genocide.

Gently, the man lifted the child into his arms and did what he could to calm the boy's crying.

"Great Spirit... What a way for one so innocent to be born into this life..." he spoke to the sky, "But I have no doubt in my mind that you support him, and that one day, this child will be this world's salvation."

"He will be raised to fight, and he will learn the ways of our people..."

The Guardian sat on his usual rock, looking at the sky.

His thoughts were far away... in another time... in another life... but not the one he lived on Earth...

Joshua tapped his father on the shoulder. "Dad? You feel it, too?"

"Indeed, Joshua. I feel it... Our pasts are changing..." the Guardian looked sullen, "Joshua, you can still go home..."

"I'm not leaving, Dad. There's nothing left in that world for me. I want to stay here with you... Besides, you need someone to watch the kids."

The Guardian looked at the orphans under his watchful eye. Mahri was innocently playing with her toys with another child playing with a figure carved from a lump of coal.

"You're right... but I fear what may happen to you, my son, when it all comes together..."

"I'm not afraid, Dad. What happens, happens. Either way, I'm just glad to see you alive again."

Simeon looked back to the sky. "Alive again..." he repeated.

The Archangel then vibrated in its sheath.

"Nya?!" The guardian pulled the blade out and peered at its glowing surface.

"What's going on, Dad?" Joshua asked, concerned, "What do you see?"

"Veterna..." was all the Guardian could say.

Shauni and Opal entered the temple together. What greeted them was a dimly lit hallway, with burning torches adorning the walls. If one where to strain ones sight, they would see the walls where covered in old tapestries of battle that never happened in a past that never existed.

Shauni walked in front of Opal at a quickened pace. After a few moments of walking they emerged in the inner sanctum of the shrine.
"This is the inner hub of the shrine, your not allowed to summon monsters her, so brandish weapons."
Shauni placed all her weapons (bar the cursed blades) and her monster cards in a basket at the side.
"We have nothing to fear her."
Shauni beckoned Opal to do the same.

A voice called out to them as they de-armed
"Welcome to the Temple of the Wisdom Goddess, Aura. State what wisdom you seek in the perchance of this sanctum. Based on the purity of your quest, the guardians of these hallowed halls while judge to see if you are worthy of and audience with Lady Midori"

Shauni spoke allowed, to the whole hall, as if she had done it before.
"We seek the knowledge to purge the Shadow of Soul Lupa, and to attain balance within the soul of one fractured by Gen Rin and Rikki Maru."

There was a long silence

"We, the guardians of this hallowed place, have judged your quest. We find the quest of purging the shadow of souls to be honourable. The sister that seeks this answer may step forward. We do not however, find your quest for balance to be evil. Your questions will not be answered"

Shauni grimaced "And may I ask why this quest is not honourable?"

There was silence

A figure entered the room, it was a young woman with long following brown hair, she was wearing a shrine maiden outfit.

"Your quest can only lead to destruction."
Shauni remained silent
"Opal. I am Midori, come into my chamber, we will purge the Shadow of Soul together...but you must come alone..."

She glared at Shauni, who glared back at her
"...The tainted my not enter my personal chamber"

Opal looked back at Shauni "Its ok...go with her...I'll wait for you outside."

Midori leaded Opal towards a door at the back of the shrine. Shauni regained her weapons and cards, and with anger painted on her face, she headed outside

"Stupid wench...how dare she call me...tainted..."

Though Silver may of intrerupted Over Soul, it still lasted long enough to give Veterna a boost in strenght. Then it turned it's attention to the arival of Silver. It was struck by Silver's monsters attacks. Then it's red eyes glowed even more as it released an attack at Reckeleck. Though Veterna may be slow speed wise for movement, it could release attacks very quickly. How Josiah dodged it was luck at best. Though Shadow Ball isn't the fastest attack around, Veterna could form it and use it without almost no warning. The dark beam of energy almost struck Reckeleck without hardly any warning but missed. "Was that Instakill?" Neo thought to himself.

"Careful everyone, it knows Instakill. Lucky that attack does take time to charge up. Probably why it used oversoul. Lets try to prevent it from using either attacks." Neo still had his monster and Tsuekasa still had her's. "Fenix use Fire Ball!"

"Mystical Shining Ball use Holy!"

Fenix launched it's Fire Ball attack stricking Veterna. Mystical Shining Ball begain to glow and soon energy formed around Veterna and begain to glow and soon exploded all around it causing heavy damage to Veterna.

Meanwhile Veterna lauched a Shadow Wave in a 360 stricking everyone. It did not look happy.

(Note, I will have Veterna be ko'ed in my next post cause I have something planed out for Veterna.)

*Aren't you going to attack?" *Neo called to Josiah.* 

"Your attacks don't seem to be doing much so I figured I'd try something stronger." *Perfect Light hovered in place, a golden glow pusling around him.*

"Just give him one more minute!" *Virgo shot through the air, drawing Veterna's attention away from Perfect Light.*

"If you say so, but this attack better be worth it!"

*Josiah continued to build energy. He was fairly certain that his normal attacks, combined with those of his friends, would have been enough to win the battle but this special move was something he'd been wanting to test out for a long time. Although his merged forms were strong, his attacks had always been limited to powered up versions of things that his monsters knew, or could learn. But, with so much power, it seemed like he should be able to transcend that. To use attacks even stronger than the legendaries... If only he could figure out how...* "Well," *he finished charging and looked up,* "here goes nothing..." *The glow around him intensified as he struggled to bend the immense power to his will.* "Aria of Infinity!!!"

The attack struck with persice aim. Veterna cried out as it took massive amount of damage from the attack. After it was done, Veterna didn't look soo good.

"Wouldn't be smart to use Apocalypse. Legionnaire would be better." thought Neo. "Fenix use Legionnaire!" Fenix attacked with Legionnaire stricking Veterna. The monster fell to the ground. Then Neo noticed lines glowing on it. Then to everyone's surprise it begain to speak.

"Well done. Especially you Neo and Josiah. Both your performances were well done and cleaver. My master is pleased with my defeat as this was a test of what is to come for both of you. Though I was weak to what you will come to face in the future." Then the lines disapeared and Veterna disapeared in a flash of light, as if returning to a card.

Neo just stared at the area where Veterna was just at, not sure what to make of all this. "Does anyone else find that weird?"

Opal followed the girl as she left Shauni behind.
"So...what is going to happen?" Opal asked Midori as she removed Lopa from her deck of cards.

"You will see." Midori replied to Opal.

Midori placed the card into a slot at the centre of a large room
"Everything is based on balance Opal. You need to ask Lopa to be purified. A soul unwilling can not let go of its hate. You friend out there is on such creature"
"She is not some monster!" Opal protested
"See her as you will, but that person, has great darkness within them, and she is unwilling to let go of it. Ask Lopa to be purified. If your will is greater than hers, she will be usable to you"
midori nudged Opal forward
"You must argue it out with her. Summon Lopa and converse with her. While she is in this shrine she can do no harm. Tell her, if she does not consent to my purification, she will be destroyed."

Shauni sat outside the shrine, sulking
"That stupied cow pat."
