Underling

Alrighty, so the one I've got for this week is one I actually started reading not too long ago (as in, I started like a bit over a month ago) and, for the first time in a while, I REALLY liked it. Probably because it's got a lot of mythology in it, and I'm a total mythology nut... Anywho, the comic is called Underling.

Anyway! It's about a ne'er do well, rather genre savvy boy named Lazarus who gets caught up in a plan to bring the end of days... and that he is more than just an average boy. Along the way, he meets a Rakshasi (enter Hindu mythology!) named E-s-h-i-t-a (dashes aren't supposed to be there, but I had to insert them or else it got censored...) and, though they don't get along too well at first, they end up traveling together. We've also got demons of all sorts, tapping into some more obsucre mythologies other than just the usual Greek, Roman and Norse... which is awesome.

The artwork is great. I love the artist's style.

There may be some foul language here and there... I can't really remember. It's nothing significant.

And, I can't really post favourite comics easily without giving away the plot... but I feel some safe ones to post would be this and this! Anyway, I really love the comic. It's... rather interesting, because the main characters aren't really "good guys" (even check the the cast list), and with the integration of other mythologies, it makes for an interesting story...

...I feel like a lot of the comics I post here have to do with mythology. Brat-Halla, The God's Pack, and now Underling... well, all of them are different mythologies, so it works!

I finished the archives. The art is good and a mix of different mythology is always cool. Despite that, I'm having trouble getting into it. The beginning seemed to be moving a bit too fast (jumping from major event to major event without really taking the time to explain things or properly introduce the important characters) and Lazarus takes things way too much in stride. Sure he complains a lot, but he doesn't even get scared or freak out in the slightest when a guy is killed right in front of him. And then the weird stuff starts happening and that doesn't really phase him either. At this point, I can't say that I particularily care for him or any of the other important characters. They either haven't been developed enough or just don't have a very interesting personality. I may keep reading for now but at the moment, while I don't really dislike Underling, it hasn't hooked me either.

Right, so I managed to get through this last weekend in New York, but I didn't feel like posting then. I enjoyed this comic a good bit. Ouch, though Josiah is right, the characters are not very well developed and he didn't react to that killing. One could say he's in shock, or argue about culture's desensitization to violence, but that's a bit off. Also, do you know where the black feathers are from?
Anyways, I'm keeping a eye on this... Which means one more webcomic on my list of webcomics I forget to read so often...

Also, as a side note, there's a D10 system tabletop called Scion that mixes a bunch of mythologies. I found it interesting, but our group kind of rushed through it, so things got a little strange. You might like it, once you get used to the system.

Yay finally got around to this. As the others have said, there's definitely a problem with the pacing... I don't know if it's so much that the characters aren't well written, but the whole flow of the story is a bit awkward and rushed. I get the feeling that the author wanted to keep things moving quickly because of the way the webcomic format works, as opposed to printed comics... one pager per update, not a whole chapter. Like that.

But the story is good enough and there have been plenty of funny moments. Like this one. I'll keep reading a bit further, at least.
