The Gods of Arr-Kelaan

Post by Josiah »

Here's another comic I started reading pretty recently. The creators of a few of my favorite comics had previously commented on how much they liked it and I happened to see a link a couple weeks back when I had a little free time so I gave it a go.

The Gods of Arr-Kelaan is a fantasy comic that's sometimes funny and sometimes serious. You could start here at the very beginning which is Volume 0. But for the purposes of this club you're probably better off starting here at the beginning of Volume 3. That's where I started and it's a pretty good place to begin. You don't really miss anything too important. If you like the comic you can always go back and read Volumes 0 and 2 later.
Plot: In the not too distant future a space cruise ship was attacked by pirates and crash landed on a mysterious planet. Years have past since then and the survivors of the crash, who have been spread across the planet, are discovering that they have gained incredible powers and are, in a way, becoming gods of their new home. The comic follows all the gods and goddesses but the main character and head god is Ronson, God of Alcohol and Apathy, a guy who would rather be left alone and drink then be bothered with all this god stuff.
Volume 0 tells about when Ronson discovered his powers and his first 'epic quest' but cuts off in the middle and is continued in Volume 1 (which isn't online right now).
Volume 3 follows Ronson as he searches for the wreckage of the space ship in an attempt to get home while meeting with various other gods along the way.
Volume 2 (in case you were wondering where that went) takes place a couple hundred years or so later and contains a lot of short legends and stories about the various gods, it's best to wait until you've at least finished Volume 3 to read it.
Volume 4 is the current volume and picks up shortly after Volume 3 left off.
Art: The art varies a lot because the comic has been going for a long time. Volume 2 was actually drawn first and its art is ok but nothing great. The art steadily improves after that (Volume 0, 3, 4 in that order) and eventually switches to full color and looks quite good.
Things to Know: As previously mentioned, volume 1 isn't available online and 2 actually takes place way after 4 (though it has lots of stories of past events in it).
Favorite Strips: I do have some, mostly involving either Ronson or Sphin the oracle but I'm running real late right now so I don't have time to find them. I'll post them later if I get the chance.

I'm not sure how much I've read because I haven't been keeping track, But I like this one, the art styles an old fav and It reminds me of another comic I used to read which I can't remember the name of right now. I'll think of it eventually. I do have acouple favorite strips but I don't feel like searching for them right now, mainly because I'm tired, yeah that happens when you work twelve days straight without much sleep, I'm surprised that I can actually keep count of the days.
Redback, Funnel-Web, Blue-ringed octopus
Taipan, Tigersnake and a Box jellyfish
Stonefish and the poison thing that lives in a shell
That spikes you when you pick it up

I admit that I haven't read as far as I should have... because I put it off to the last minute... because, well, the whole not knowing where you're supposed to start thing isn't much of an incentive to read it. Even with all the flashbacks - which really started to get obnoxious - I got the feeling I was missing something important by not reading the first few volumes... The fact that one of them isn't available on line makes for a BIG point deduction.

It was funny, though. Brindle is thebest. And the art was generally good... but I never have been picky about art. It wasn't so blindingly awful that it made the comic less funny, so I'm not complaining.

But meh, I guess I've just been spoiled by The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. If you're going to show your series completely out of order and feature a God on Earth type deal... that's how you do it.
"Irregardless" and "Over exaggerated" are NEVER CORRECT EVER because they are redundant
Regardless means "without regard", and adding "ir" on the front actually makes it a double negative; exaggerate means "to overstate" so you're literally saying "over overstate."
Example: I can not exaggerate the importance of this fact enough, regardless of how often people ignore it.
